It takes a villain

Here’s a creature design. This is inked with a pentel brush pen over blue pencils printed on bristol board.

Here’s a look at some of the early “roughs” or preliminary sketches for pages from The Kid Knight. I made sure to not include any spoilers in these. :)

Baltimore Comic-Con 2009

The Kid Knight made its debut at the 2009 Baltimore Comic-Con. This is a great event and one of the few true comic-book events. Many of the other comicons have become “pop culture” shows with actors, wrestlers and models but not Baltimore. As IDW’s Bob Schreck said during the Harvey Awards, “This is where the comic books went.”

I had copies of The Kid Knight: First Look for sale at the table and the response was fantastic! In addition to the 40-page preview book, I had foam swords made to give away.

I was set up with the Kids Love Comics crew which made up a giant block of eight booths at the show. I had the pleasure of sharing a table with Scott Sava, who I can’t say enough nice things about. His Dreamland Chronicles is a must-read for fans of fantasy. Jimmy Gownley jetted in after appearing at a novella conference on Saturday with his hot-off-the-presses Amelia Rules: A Very Ninja Christmas.

Kids Love Comics creators included John Gallagher, Rich Faber, Franco, Jason Kruse, John Alves, Jenni Gregory, Todd Web and Harold Bucholz. Scott Cohn, Jamar Nichols and Mike Manley appeared suddenly on Saturday, set up, sold stuff and vanished just as quickly. I got to chat all-to-briefly with Mike Manley, one of the smartest guys to ever draw a mask.

Below is a gallery of photos from the show with additional photos posted here.
